About Reflexology
The History of Reflexology
The art of reflexology dates back to Ancient Egypt and China. In 1913, Dr William Fitzgerald introduced what was then called ‘zone therapy’ to the western world. In the 1930’s, Eunice Ingham, or 'Mother of Reflexology' as she was known, developed the therapy into what is know today as, Reflexology. She noted how congestion or tensions in certain zones of the foot were mirrored in the corresponding part of the body. By using her fingers and thumbs to stimulatethe reflexes she achieved the same therapeutic effect, which is carried on today.
Reflexology is a simple, non-invasive holistic therapy performed on the feet or hands. It is based on the principle that there are reflex points on the hands and feet which correspond to all parts of the body’s glands, organs and structures. By stimulating these points the body can be encouraged to relieve stress, increase circulation, unblock energy channels and maintain a state of health.
Reflexology treats the whole person, body, mind and spirit to induce a state of harmony and balance and so stimulates the body's own potential to heal both physically and emotionally.
Reflexology is a safe and gentle therapy, which can be used for virtually every health problem without any adverse side effects. Many people also use reflexology for the relaxation it brings and in many cases it has helped to promote continuing good health.
Reflexology is wonderfully relaxing for both the mind and body and especially effective in combating stress. Doctors and health care professionals recognise reflexology as a well established, respected and effective therapy.
